May 23rd was another big night in the Cyclones calendar, this time it was the clubs annual awards evening at the Platform, Holywood. After a very successful season there was plenty to celebrate and judging for this year couldn’t have been tougher with a number of people in the running to take home each award.

First up, senior head coach Tony Sinton presented the awards for his team starting with the ‘Most Improved player’ award which went to newcomer Richard Gault whose tremendous play helped solidify the Cyclones defence.

For the second year in a row Richard Grace picked up the ‘Best Defensive player’ award while Steven Ewen, the top scorer for the Cyclones and league leader in points, picked up the ‘Best Offensive player’ award.

The ‘Players Player’ award was probably the easiest of the night to pick as after a unanimous vote it was decided that retiring netminder Brian Morrow was the man for the job after his huge performances in the playoffs and throughout the season.

The senior awards concluded when Tony Sinton named Dave Nicolai his ‘Coaches Player of the Year’ before handing the mic over to James Glover for the junior awards.

The Cyclones U12s have come on leaps and bounds this season expanding from 8 kids who were newcomers to the game, to a team of 20 good hockey players. Scott Ewen, who started the season as a forward before donning the goal pads, picked up the ‘Most Improved player’ award for his heroics in net.

Nathan Dorrian topped of a season that saw him lead the U12 league in points, earn a place on the GB team and pick up the league MVP award by adding the ‘Best Defensive Award’ while his Cyclones and GB team-mate Steven Eccles added the ‘Coaches Player of the Year’ award to his list of honours.

The awards were rounded off with a father son duo as Matthew and Sterling Groves picked up the ‘Best Foward’ and ‘Cyclone of the Year’ awards respectively.
