The first ever game for the Northern Cyclones Under 10 (squirt) team took place in Bangor on Sunday 14th September, in the form of a pre-season friendly with local rivals the Bangor Chiefs. With both teams fielding some new young talent it was the Cyclones who took the early lead in just the second shift of the game as Dean Burns netted the puck past the Chiefs netminder Andy Creane.
Both teams showed some real promise early on, but again some quality puck movenent and a well placed shot saw Dean Burns and the Cyclones score their second of the game. The early lead sparked confidence in the young Cyclones team with Matthew McRoberts, Nathan Grimshaw, Matthew Groves, Harry McIlwrath, Marcus Smyth, Ben Murdoch & Dylan Kennedy all getting their names on the score sheet as the Cyclones piled on the offensive pressure.
The young Chiefs team whilst up against it from the outset never lost heart and their efforts were rewarded with 3 goals of their own, finding a chink in the armour of the Cyclones defence and netminding duo of Scott Ewen & Matthew Macartney.
It was evident to see that some quality young talent in emmerging in Northern Ireland. With this victory the Cyclones Squirt’s the team will no doubt be looking to build on the performance and carry the momenum from this win into their next game as they prepare for the 2008/2009 season.
